PROJECT NEED
We have been experiencing major weather phenomenon in the Los Angeles region that is adversely impact our daily life and health. In September, we had multiple 100+ degrees days, fires, droughts, and power outages. Students are unable to focus or learn in classrooms with broken AC; families are struggling to keep cool with power outages; and mom & pop businesses lose profits. In particular Boyle Heights' electrical infrastructure is constantly breaking down and few housing units have central AC to cool off the residents. Furthermore, the sparse amount outdoor shade in inner city offers little reprieve from the blistering heat. This aligns with the STEM Access & Education, as we take on an engineering approach to the problem, and then educate the community. |
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
Our team will coordinate and demonstrate three hands-on activities to educate the impact of urban heat on campus and community. Participate in at least one tree planting event in the city of Los Angeles & Boyle Heights. Solutions and implementation to reduce carbon monoxide emission, by taking public transportation. In the long term, we aspire to address and challenge others to take proactive steps to conquer the negative impact of climate change in different facets. When we work together locally, we can help the future globally. After all, we only have one planet. |
We need to be the positive change
in this climate change.
